What is Anxiety?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be thought of as extreme anxiety disorder that follows a life-threatening or traumatic event. Symptoms of Post-traumatic stress disorder nightmares (flashbacks), hypervigilance, and withdrawal.

Phobias on the other hand refer to exaggerated, often unrealistic fear of a certain object, situation, or activity that actually poses little or no danger in reality.

A combination of a number of ‘biopsychosocial’ factors, such as genetic vulnerability, interacts with stress, situations, or trauma to give birth to clinically significant syndromes.

Anxiety is a product of an interaction of several factors that include brain circuits (changes within the brain) and environmental stress.

Severe stress affects the transmission of information by nerve cells from one point of the brain to the other.

Studies have shown that changes in the proper functioning of a person’s brain circuits may cause anxiety.

Similar studies have also showed that alteration of a person’s brain structures responsible for controlling memories associated with strong emotions may also result in anxiety.

Anxiety disorders can also be passed on from one family to another.

Anxiety is also linked to side effects of some medications.

Illicit drugs such as amphetamines, heroin or cocaine used as intoxicants may also induce anxiety.

The withdrawal of an individual from illegal drugs like opiates, or prescription drugs such as barbiturates or benzodiazepines may also lead to anxiety.

When stressed with a serious medical illness, it is also possible for a person to experience anxiety.

Lack of oxygen as witnessed in emphysema and pulmonary embolism, a person may suffer anxiety.

A physical health problem or illness can trigger anxiety or complicate the treatment of anxiety.

Different forms of abuse including sexual, emotional, physical, or verbal abuse may also trigger anxiety.

Some cases of anxiety have also been linked to the loss of a loved one.

It is also important to note that persons with a family history of anxiety are at a higher risk of anxiety than those without.

Anxiety Diagnosis

Diagnosis for anxiety relies on physical and psychological symptoms reported by a patient.

For correct diagnosis, the mental health provider should adequately understand his patient’s symptoms.

For a person to be diagnosed with anxiety, he or she should have experienced the symptoms of anxiety for at least 6 months.

A mental health provider may seek to know a person’s symptoms and medical history to diagnose anxiety. Your doctor may ask detailed questions regarding the patient’s symptoms.

Sometimes, psychological questionnaires are employed by mental health providers to facilitate acquisition of information regarding a person’s symptoms.

Alternative medicine for anxiety includes supplements designed to relieve anxiety.

The most common supplements used to relieve anxiety include Kava, Valeran, vitamin B, and Folic acid.

Valerian, which is sedative, is recommended for use as a sleep aid.

Food also plays a key role in maintaining a person’s mental as well as physical health. A nourishing diet is therefore very crucial in fighting anxiety.

Doctors may also suggest specific nourishing diets to boost the mood of a person diagnosed with anxiety and to ensure a healthy brain.

Studies have also confirmed that exercises are effective in managing mild and moderate anxiety.

By keeping active, a person can lift his mood, improve his sleep, and boost energy levels.

With exercises, individuals can choke up negative thoughts, promote the need to socialize with others, and improve on their general wellbeing.

With exercises, one can also change the levels of the various chemicals in his brain.

Studies have also shown that abuse of substances such as alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine puts one at a higher risk of anxiety.

Regular exercises help keep anxiety risks at bay.

Some persons diagnosed with anxiety were found to have denied themselves of enough sleep. Failure to get enough sleep promotes anxious thoughts leaving you at a much higher risk of anxiety.

Mental health providers recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night.

Severe anxiety that is ongoing and a hindrance to one’s daily activities is categorized as generalized anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) can be described as extreme shyness characterized by an enfeebling fear of being viewed negatively by other people or being humiliated in public.

Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety disorder is characterized by fear, uneasiness, and feelings of panic.

Persons diagnosed with anxiety disorder experience obsessions about certain things and suffer constant and repeated worrying.

Physical symptoms include cold and sweaty hands, dry mouth, muscle aches, and muscle tension.

Other physical signs and symptoms of anxiety are stomach upset, insomnia, headache, tremors and twitches, sweating and a pounding heart.

Persons with anxiety disorder have trouble sleeping.

Anxiety Causes

Anxiety can be triggered by a number of external factors such as a stressful job, personal relationships, financial stress, and many others.

Heavy use of substances (sedatives, cannabis, alcohol, amphetamines) may cause anxiety especially as the effects of such substances deteriorate.

Individuals confronted with an ongoing stressful event such as pregnancy and the idea of giving birth are at a higher risk of anxiety.

Continuing physical illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or hormonal problems may lead to anxiety.

Anxiety Treatment

The most common drug prescribed to help persons with anxiety to deal with panic attacks in the short-term are Benzodiazepines.

Benzodiazepines help lessen tension without necessarily making persons diagnosed with anxiety drowsy. These drugs are not long-term solutions because of their addictiveness.

The other anti-anxiety medication is Buspirone recommended for long-term use.

Kava is a herb that relaxes persons with anxiety by making them to feel sedated. However, this herb should not be used by persons with liver problems.

Vitamin B and Folic acid are nutrients used to boost production of chemicals necessary for the proper functioning of the brain.
