NOTES TO THE TEACHER

» Introduction
eWorkbook Level 1 is not a complete self-study course. Neither is it a testing tool. It has been developed as a general supplement to a regular course for self- or instructor-guided extra practice on core language areas.

» Student profile
The student whom you will be using this eWorkbook will have studied English for around 100 hours, or will be presently taking a Beginner/Elementary level, and will be getting extra practice along with the regular course.

» Use of the eWorkbook
eWorkbook Level 1 can be used by the teacher in class in tandem with a regular course as a means of providing immediate follow-up work on specific grammar and vocabulary work. Alternatively, students can use it for self-study at home for revision and practice of material covered in previous courses, or to supplement their current course.

FEATURES

» Organization of the eWorkbook
The eWorkbook provides an opportunity for development and extension of students' competence in the language. Each of the units is an integrated package containing grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, pronunciation and speaking practice. The eWorkbook opens at a Contents page allowing for a quick and easy access to all the material, as well as a choice for entrance depending on the learner's individual preferences and learning style.

The different sections - Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, and Listening - are color-coded respectively blue, green, red, yellow for easier orientation. The audio recordings are clearly marked with a symbol and a button(in varying size).

» Grammar
Both inductive and deductive approaches are used for the presentation and practice of grammar points. Learners are encouraged to discover grammar rules and patterns. Following that are controlled practice activities where students can use the target structure. Students are encouraged to make multiple attempts at each task until they get all the answers correct as this will foster reflection, self-monitoring and self-correction skills.

» Reading
The texts range from several adapted (in the first units to practise the grammar points) to two simple unadapted authentic texts to develop comprehension skills. Students should be made aware that they do not need to understand every word to do the tasks successfully. These unadapted texts have been specifically chosen as to offer interesting and amusing information that can be followed later on by the student on the Internet, thus encouraging reading for interest and incidental learning of vocabulary.

» Vocabulary
A variety of presentation and practice techniques is used in eWorkbook Level 1. Rich in imagery and sound, the vocabulary activities encourage students to work out the meanings of unknown words for themselves while practising the pronunciation. The activities both consolidate and pre-teach vocabulary items, at the same time expanding the students' vocabulary stock.

» Listening
The listening section starts with pronunciation activities in the first units, through short, simple dialogues and true-false general comprehension, to longer comprehension tasks for detailed information, leading to the development of note-taking skills and comprehension skills.

» Writing
Although there is no separate writing section, writing is implicitly present in the majority of the activities. Due to the nature of the media through which the content of this eWorkbook is delivered and presented, writing remains at the level of phrase, sentence and text structure, and correct spelling.
