The New York Subway - Under the Big Apple

For most people their first contact with New York's subway system is in the movies. Unfortunately, most of what we see on films is not particularly attractive: the subway is a dark, dirty and dangerous place. In fact, it is not. The NYC sybway is , and way to get around the Big Apple. And , too. How fast? In half an hour from Broadway to Shea Stadium. How cheap? For $1.50 you can go almost anywhere in four boroughs - from the Bronx to Manhattan, from Queens to Broklyn. How safe? Crime on the subway is down by 64% since 1990 - level in 20 years. The trains themselves are also . Once favourite for graffiti artists, any spray-painted trains are now removed at the end of the line and cleaned immediately. It has worked: there's no point to graffiti if no one gets to see it.

A group of New Yorkers, however, would disagree. According to its annual report "State of the Subway" report, the Straphangers Campaign claims that the subway is and than ever. Although the report found breakdowns are and overall service is , it also confirmed something that every commuter knows - it's next to impossible to find a seat during rush hour. They may have a point, but what subway system anywhere in the world isn't crowded at rush hour? The same report also concludes that the quality of a ride is not worth the cost of a token. But Underground fare in London is still than in New York. New York City Transit has announced that it will be extending services by 4.6 per cent on weekdays, but the problem is not about to go away: with over a billion passengers a year, the transit system is bustling with half a million new riders a day.
